Giving more Detailed Instructions Help Improve Students Practice

I have found that giving a estimated time to practice may not be sufficient to help students how to practice. They know that they should practice 15-20 min a day but HOW they practice determines how successful their practice time is. So instead of just instructing my student to practice for a certain amount of time, I’ve also added how many times they should practice each song as well as which measures of the song to target first. I have found that when I give more detailed instructions on how many times to practice each song especially to my younger students ages 5-7, they are able to finish a song by the following week. They progress faster and seem to have more focus One of the primary goals of my lesson content is teaching my students HOW to practice and not Just WHAT to practice. My students also feel more empowered, less frustrated because now they can finish a song quickly and learn something new. Now happy practicing!
