The key to singing high notes is firstly believing you can. Many of my students come thinking they can’t hit the high notes but I lead them through exercises to show them they can. To increase your range though may take time just like it may take time to be able to do the splits. Your vocal range can also increase through targeted vocal exercises aimed at increasing flexibility. A couple exercises that can help are:
- Lip Trills- this keeps the air steady, diaphragm muscles working properly on the pitch you are warming up on
- Sirens- Sing your very highest note and scoop/slide down the scale to reach your lower notes. Once you’re comfortable with that, start staying in their higher register/falsetto range and do a couple rounds of sliding from the your highest note to mid-range to your higher notes back to your mid range, then back and forth like a roller coaster a few times.
- When you start singing higher notes, you won’t need as much air and you’ll be feeling the resonance(vibration sensation) in your head. This is why it’s called head voice
- Do staccato exercises in thirds going up in a chord on the word, “Ha, Ho, He, or Hu.” Sometimes working with beginners it’s best to do short snappy notes (staccato) instead of longer sustained notes with high notes. It will be less intimidating and students are more likely to be able to reach those notes immediately without any strain.
If you’re interested in working on your high notes and increasing your range, I do offer 1 on 1 coaching as well as weekly group classes. Feel free to send me an email at lessonswithmschang@gmail. or fill out this form and I’ll be in touch with you.
