How do I sing really Low Notes?

Low notes can be just as hard to sing as your high notes but in a different way. Many people always want to be able to sing higher but low notes are just as important to hit. Reason being lots of songs start with Verses that require you to access the lowest part of your range. Students often can also get low notes stuck in their throat. You might feel like a scratchy choking sensation when you hit the bottom of your range. How do you sing your low notes with ease? Here are few vocal tips:

  1. Low notes require more air actually than higher notes. So make sure you get enough air from below by your gut.
  2. To avoid singing or choking in your throat, imagine, singing in front of your lips. Yes in front so the air is flowing forward in constant motions as if you are trying to fog up a mirror or pretend you’re blowing smoke like Puff the Magic Dragon.
  3. See on a vowel like “Ah” and go up three and down three notes with one hand on your chest. Feel the vibration you feel on your chest. The reason why it’s called chest voice is because you can feel a vibrating sensation on your chest when you sing the low notes.
  4. Do lip trips on your lowest notes using the above exercise #3. If you can find resonance during your lip trip ie. (your lips are still buzzing and trilling), you most likely can hit those lowest notes. Remember though, to always find resonance in the mask area of your face and also your chest on those low notes.
  5. Don’t push it. Be patient. If you really can’t hit those low notes after you’ve done all these steps, relax and find a vocal coach that can help you.
