Projection as a lot to do with where your power is. Are you using your throat to produce the sound you want? Or are you singing from your core? I tell my students you core is like the engine to a car. If you don’t have an engine, you can’t drive a car. Likewise, if you don’t use your core, you won’t be able to sing properly nor project. To properly project you need to use your core muscles as if you’re talking to someone passionately across the room. Naturally you’ll feel your abdominal muscles contract and release. This is a sign you’re doing it correctly.
Secondly, you’ll need to take make sure you’re breathing and releasing air while speaking too. If you don’t have enough air, you won’t be able to project. They go hand and hand.
One exercise I recommend for practicing projection as a beginner is to say, “Hey, Hey, Hey!” on one pitch three times. You’ll feel the movement of you core go out and in. Instead of focusing on singing it, focus on saying it passionately. This will allow you to access your chest voice which helps you project.
