How early should I enroll my child in music lessons?

It’s normal for parents to want to expose their child to music early and get them on the fast track. However, it’s more important to consider what works best for each stage of development. From birth to about age three, I recommend introducing music through fun group singing classes that help children learn rhythm and instruments through movement and play.

Between ages four and five, you can start checking your child’s readiness for more structured learning. At this stage, children may still have a limited attention span, so private singing classes may not be the best fit just yet. Instead, group instruction can continue to be a great way for them to socialize while developing musical awareness.

I personally suggest waiting until your child can read, visually follow notes, and sit still for more than 20 minutes before beginning singing lessons or piano. Just as importantly, the desire to learn should come from the child rather than being pushed by the parent. Many of my youngest students began because they expressed genuine excitement about music at home. When the child wants to learn, lessons are far more likely to be consistent and enjoyable.

The ideal window to start learning an instrument is often between ages four and nine, as studies show this is a strong developmental period for musical skills. But if that span is missed, don’t worry—it’s never too late to learn. Music can be started at any age.
