There is quite a lot of controversy on what’s the correct breathing technique. After years of training and performing myself, I’ve learned the best technique that was worked best for me and my students is thinking expansion instead of only contraction. So as I mentioned above, there’s a muscle called the diaphragm that goes up and down like a parachute when you inhale or exhale. This muscles helps you sustain notes on pitches. You will feel your core muscles go in and out. When releasing air on a pitch, naturally you’ll feel your abdomen contract a bit. This is normal. However, when you have to hold a note longer, it’s more effective if you keep expanding all around the rib cage without collapsing and contracting fully. This will give you more breathing stamina capacity and avoid you running out of air quickly.
Make sure you breath in air below your rib cage, from your stomach, to the sides, and even your lower back. Be careful not to raise your shoulders or raise your chest when breathing in. Imagine you’re breathing from your gut. Breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth on the letter “Sssss,” for as long as you can. You should be releasing and the air out evenly not in spurts. Time yourself how many seconds you can hold it for. The longer the better.
