Zoom In-Class Winter Recital: Bringing Families Together Through Music

Every winter, I host a semi-formal recital where each student performs two songs they have prepared for their parents, relatives, or friends. Before performing, I ask them two questions:

  1. What are you learning in your lessons?

  2. What do you enjoy most about taking piano or voice lessons?

Then comes the best part as they sing or play their two songs and finish with a proud bow.

This year’s recital was different. Instead of being in person, we held it over Zoom. While it may not have the same in-person feeling, it opened up something special — connection across the globe.

Last week, grandparents joined from Romania, and a cousin logged in from Spain to watch their loved ones perform “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Twinkle Twinkle.” It was heartwarming to see families united through music from different parts of the world.

Why I Host Winter Recitals

Having a winter recital in addition to our summer one helps students set goals. When they know they will perform, they practice more, stay consistent, and take their lessons seriously. Parents also get to see the results of their investment as they watch and hear how much their children have grown.

It benefits everyone. Students gain confidence and motivation. Parents feel proud and encouraged. As a vocal teacher, I see the progress and joy that music brings to each family.

Hosting recitals, whether in person or online, creates a positive learning experience. Students practice with purpose, parents celebrate their child’s success, and everyone shares in the joy of music.

Final Thoughts

The Zoom In-Class Winter Recital reminded me that music brings people together in any setting. Whether we are in the same room or connecting through a screen, the joy of learning and sharing music remains the same.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas season filled with music, love, and togetherness.
