Every Winter time, I host a semi-formal recital where the student has prepared two songs to perform to their parents, relatives, or friends during the last part of their lesson. I ask them 2 questions usually. 1. What are they learning in their lessons? 2. What do they enjoy most from taking piano and/or voice lessons? Then they perform their two songs and conclude with a bow. This year, instead of in person lessons, I conducted them over zoom. Although it doesn’t have the same feel but it has a broader reach. Due to zoom, relatives from across the globe can sign on and watch their grandchildren perform “It’s a Spoonful of Sugar,” or “Twinkle Twinkle” without having to fly to my studio. This is actually what happened last week during the winter recital. The grandparents zoomed in from Romania, and the cousin zoomed in from Spain. How special was that?!!! The reason I have a winter recital on top of an annual summer recital is because students do well with goals. When they know they have to perform, they tend to practice more and take things seriously. Also the parents see the fruit of their investment. They see/watch/hear what their kids are learning and see what it’s producing. It’s also an effective marketing strategy for retaining students. Parents want to feel like their money is well used and they applaud and praise their child. The child is then more motivated to learn, keep practicing, and advancing. It becomes a positive cycle. No matter what outlet, I believe having recitals is beneficial for both the parent and the parents who enroll their children. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and of course, be safe!
